RECOGNIZE
Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviors that some individuals use against their intimate partners, former partners, or other family members. It can include physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse or intimidation, property or economic abuse, and more.
Sexual violence means unwanted sexual activity that a person is forced to participate in or to which the person is not able to give consent due to age, ability, or intoxication.
Some “red flags” of abuse include:
Injuries blamed on being clumsy or accidents
Name calling
Blaming of victim or excusing abuser’s actions
Isolation from friends or family
Uncharacteristic signs of anxiety or fear
RESPOND
Respond in a way that supports the survivor. This may mean telling a person that you are concerned because you see some “red flags”. It may mean recognizing when a person is reaching out for help.
Respond in a way that supports the victim. Start by believing.
Some things you may wish to say:
“I care about you.”
“It’s not your fault – no matter what.”
“I support your decisions.”
“I’m worried about you.”
“I’m here for you.”
REFER
Let the survivor know that help is available.
